4+ messages is a lil bug where for every message within a chat, even if that message is just an "internal message" one like a read receipt or emoji reaction, it says there are 2 unread messages for each message.

this looks like 4+ messages in the inbox, and, it makes users edgy about their communication with someone because:

1. either they are overwhelmed by seeing 4+ messages (or more if more were sent), and/or, already find someone to be ‘a lot’ and, this confirms the their perception.

2. they think that there is an issue with their connection or device where they are not getting the entirety of someone's message, and, they will wait for the remainder. they may forget in that time.

this "glitch" is intentional.

dark design is psychological warfare.

these systems were never made for us.
